Hair Growth Cycle and Hair Regrowth

The normal life span for each hair is from two to six years. Each hair grows in a cycle that can be divided into three stages: the hair growth stage lasting two to six years, the partial degeneration stage lasting 10 to 14 days, and finally the resting phase during which time the hair is shed and there is an involution of the hair follicles lasting about three months.

These three phases of hair growth are called Anagen, Catagen and Telogen.

Anagen - The hair growth phase lasts between two and eight years, during which the growth cells in the papilla (hair root) rapidly divide and produce the hair shaft which becomes keratinized as it pushes up and out of the pore. At the same time, the follicle grows down into the deeper levels of the dermis (skin) to get a flow of blood.

Catagen - The transitional phase lasts two to four weeks. This is part of a renewal process where the follicle is literally degraded and the hair growth stops, but the hair does not fall out. During the this phase, the hair follicle shrinks to about 1/6 of the normal length and basically breaks away from the papilla. The bulb detaches from the blood supply and the hair shaft eventually is pushed up as the follicle disintegrates. This hair loss is a normal part of the human hair growth cycle.

Telogen - The resting phase can last two to four months, during this time the hair still does not grow but remains attached to the follicle while the dermal papilla is in a resting phase below. Approximately 10-15 percent of all hairs are in this phase at any one time.

After the Telogen phase the cycle is complete and the hair goes back into the Anagen phase. It is at this time when the new hair shaft is forming that the old hair is pushed out and lost.

Like skin cells, hair grows and is shed regularly. Shedding 50 to 125 hairs a day is normal unless the hair lost is not being replaced by hair regrowth. Progressive hair loss begins naturally in both sexes around the age of 40, accelerating in the 60s.

About 40 percent of male hair loss happens, to some extent, by the age of 35. When hair growth fails to keep up with hair loss, it results in thinning hair that can eventually lead to baldness.
