Coping With Female Hair Loss
Go Back

Ladies, don’t panic! Believe it or not, hair loss in women is quite common. While you may be quite surprised to hear that, it’s the truth. Approximately 20 million women are experiencing some form of hair loss in the United States, right now!

Coping with female hair loss can be very difficult, but remember - hair loss does NOT imply that you are less attractive. FYI: you’re as beautiful as you always were. As difficult as it may seem, it’s essential that you keep your good attitude, self-confidence, and social life.

Perhaps the social factors that surround us women make the experience of female hair loss so much more difficult for us. Men become ‘distinguished’ once their hair turns gray. Women rely on hair-dressers. Men bald and age with perfection, what about us? What will people say about us? And that’s the problem right there: we care too much about what they think about us.

You may not be looking for a reason right now, you may be searching for a remedy. Well, in order to achieve a healthy remedy we must seek the cause of hair loss. Fortunately, we live in the information age. Doctors seem to have more and more education on many conditions as well as treatments to correct them. It’s up to you to investigate the changes in your body.

A woman’s body can go through many changes that may promote hair loss. Has your mind and body gone through an excessive amount of stress lately? The birth of a child or the loss of something special/important (such as a loved one, job, etc.) can cause a woman to experience hair-loss, or display other stress-related symptoms.

Instead of traveling further down the stress-spiral, women coping with hair loss need to become strong and proactive during this tough time. If you’ve made it this far than you are on the right track. Education is key to understanding and overcoming your trials and tribulations. Women are encouraged to remain open-minded to the facts of their condition, as it is imperative to treatment.

There are three main types of female hair loss: Alopecia Areata, Androgenetic Alopecia, and Telogen Effluvium. In order to establish which condition you are experiencing, your physician will most likely request a blood test. Here’s the good news: women’s hair loss may resolve itself. Typically, most hair loss in women is due to hormonal imbalances, medications, stress, and pregnancy. Medication may be administered to reverse the process of hair loss.

Once you receive an accurate diagnosis, you must remain patient. Depression and stress will only further aggravate your condition. Do not try any over the counter remedies as this could further promote hair loss and/or possibly cause other complications. Listen to your physician. If you don’t like what you hear, get a second opinion.

Finally, and most importantly, try and remain positive. Write a list of your personal thoughts and feelings about hair loss. Keep track of feelings that may change over time. Be a realist, NOT an extremist. So, you may not be the most gorgeous woman in the world.

What woman thinks they are? You’re certainly not the least attractive woman in the world! If you find yourself withdrawing from society and your normal routines, you may wish to seek counseling. Counselors are available to help you understand and cope with your condition.
