How does hair grow?

Are you experiencing anxiety when you see strands of hair in your brush? Is your hair thinning as compared to your hair when you were younger? Let me tell you that hair shedding is normal. Thus, to avoid depression and anxiety, you need to understand the question - how does hair grow? This will tell you when to worry about hair loss.

The normal hair growth cycle

Anagen stage

This is the hair growth cycle; it usually lasts between two to seven years. It is estimated that the hair grows at the rate of five to six inches every year.

Catagen stage

This is a short transition period when the hair shaft becomes detached and moves upward within the follicles. This lasts for two to four weeks.

Telogen stage

This is the resting phase. It is when the hair detaches from the follicles preparing itself to fall out. This period lasts from three to four months.

Hair shedding

This is the most dreadful, but still normal, part of the hair regrowth process. At any given time, 10% of the hair is in resting phase. Thus, this 10% will shed. This is the reason why you see hair strands in your brush or the bathroom drainer. It is normal to shed 100 strands of hair daily.

When to worry about hair shedding?

As mentioned, shedding 100 strands a day is normal. Therefore, it is appropriate to worry if you see that more than a 100 strands have fallen out in one day. However, because it is impossible to count the strands of hair you shed, you will need to use you own judgment. If you see more strands in your brush, more than what you usually shed, you need to worry.

It may be a sign of problematic hair loss if you notice strands of hair when you touch your head. A handful of strands as you comb your hair with your fingers is a serious sign of severe hair loss.

When you see this, immediately seek help from a health professional. Please note that there are a number of medical problems that show hair loss as a symptom.

Other causes of problematic hair loss

  1. Stress

  2. Vitamin deficiency

  3. Trauma

  4. Chemical damage to the hair

  5. Thyroid problems

  6. Prescription Drugs

  7. Hormonal imbalance

How does the hair grow? I may have answered this question in here. However, I want you to stop hair loss and therefore recommend that if you see an increase in the amount of strands in your brush, immediately seek help. This way, you will be sure that you will walk the earth with beautiful locks.
